Artificial Intelligence

The Center for Teaching and Learning is here to support you as you navigate the new and rapidly evolving landscape of AI in the classroom and as we prepare our students to engage with AI tools ethically and creatively. In Spring 2024, UNC Asheville conducted its first campus-wide AI Taskforce, co-led by Dr. Marietta Cameron, Dr. Lei Han, and Dr. Kate Zubko, to begin the institutional review and planning process. The pedagogical subcommittee issued the following report and recommendations: May 2024 Report. The CTL is committed to building out resources, workshops, and learning opportunities for our faculty and staff based on the further recommended actions in the report. Contact Rachel Dorsey, our Instructional Designer (AI Focus), with any suggestions or questions!

Upcoming and Ongoing Opportunities

  • 2026 The AI Rundown at UNCA: a monthly email newsletter for faculty/staff to help you stay up-to-date on recent news at the intersection of AI and Pedagogy (see archive of past posts by Instructional Designer, Rachel Dorsey)
  • 2026 Faculty/Staff Learning Circle: AI for the Anxious (Facilitators: Paige Ambord, Sociology & Rachel Dorsey, Center for Teaching and Learning)
  • Fully Asynchronous Trainings:
    • AI Literacy in the Classroom Canvas Course: AI Literacy course developed specifically with UNCA faculty in mind that came out of a May 2025 workshop put on by the CTL at UNCA. Participants gathered resources, created learning objectives, and developed AI literacy assignments in these four modules, based on AI Literacy for All: Adjustable Interdisciplinary Socio-technical Curriculum by Sri Yash Tadimalla and Mary Lou Majer for UNCC.
    • AI Foundations UNC Systems Course: The goal of this training focuses on AI as essential learning for every educated person: understanding what these tools are, how they work, when and how to use them, and when to be skeptical. This course is intended to be uploaded into your courses where you can assign any or all of the content modules. This course also has an optional discipline-specific module 4 that provides specifics for AI in Art & Design, Mathematics, English Studies, Business, Health Sciences, and Library & Information Sciences.
    • Google AI Essentials Specialization (Coursera): Learn from Google experts how to use AI effectively.
    • Google Prompting Specialization (Coursera): Four course series in which you learn from Google experts how to use AI effectively by writing clear and specific prompts. This course is recommended to anyone who wants to improve the efficacy of their prompting either to get their intended results more quickly for efficiency’s sake, or to reduce the environmental impact.
    • If you are interested in completing any of these courses, please submit an AI Training Enrollment Request.
