What is a Provost?

Simply put, a provost is the chief academic officer of a university. They are responsible for the university’s academic and budgetary affairs, including developing and assessing academic programs and supervising academic personnel policies and administration. The associate and assistant provosts, college deans, and the directors of academic units who serve the broader university, such as Ramsey Library and the Center for Teaching & Learning, also report to the provost. The provost is the university’s second-ranking official and collaborates with the chancellor of the university in setting overall academic priorities and strategies for the university’s operation and direction.
