Gaelynn Lea & Wheelchair Sports Camp
October 9 @ 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Gaelynn Lea and Kalyn Rose Heffernan of Wheelchair Sports Camp will visit UNC Asheville for an afternoon talk and evening performance.
At 3 p.m., Lea and Heffernan will discuss disability culture, access, and activism, sharing their experiences as artists and advocates working to make the arts more inclusive.
At 6 p.m., Wheelchair Sports Camp will take the stage for a free performance. Lea, winner of NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest, is an accomplished violinist, songwriter, composer, and disability advocate who has performed around the world and composed the score for Macbeth on Broadway.
Wheelchair Sports Camp, led by wheelchair-using rapper Kalyn Rose Heffernan, blends hip-hop, humor, and high-energy performance. The Denver-based band has expanded its work beyond music into performance art, museums, theater, film, and activism.
Both events are free and open to the public and will take place in the Blue Ridge Room of Highsmith Student Union.
