UNC Asheville Offers Astronomy Workshop for K-12 Teachers
     UNC Asheville will offer a hybrid classroom and online education course for local teachers. The two-credit hour course, "Stars, Constellations and Deep Sky Objects," follows the K-8 North Carolina Standard Course of Study but exposes participants to unique interdisciplinary ways to teach astronomy, making the workshop appropriate for high school teachers as well. » MORE

UNC Asheville's Center for Diversity Education to Host Hiroshima-Nagasaki Poster Exhibit

NC Asheville and the Center for Diversity Education will host the national traveling exhibit "Hiroshima-Nagasaki: Images and Stories from Eyewitness Accounts" July 9-August 8 in UNC Asheville's Karpen Hall Lobby. An opening reception and talk by Hiroshima blast survivor Miyoko Watanabe will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, in the lobby.

UNC Asheville Seeking Vendors for Educational Health Fair
     UNC Asheville's Workplace Wellness Program is seeking vendors for the "UNC Asheville Way to Health Fair" scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, on campus. The event is designed to educate University faculty and staff about the Workplace Wellness Program's four primary goals, including healthy eating, physical activity, tobacco cessation and stress management. » MORE

North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement Offers Art Workshops
     The North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement will host a series of workshops July-September for beginning to intermediate artists of all ages to hone their stills or learn more about their craft. Courses will include stone carving, beading, watercolor painting and art collecting. All workshops will take place at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center. » MORE

UNC Asheville Alumna Selected for Elite Environmental Internship
     UNC Asheville alumna Anna Lange recently was awarded an internship with the national environmental group Green Corps. Lange was one of some 25 candidates selected from more than 2,000 applicants from across the nation for the organization's highly competitive year-long environmental leadership training program. » MORE

UNC Asheville Now Offers Test Proctoring Services;
Variety of Testing Services, Formats Available

     As the rise in distance education grows, so does the need for distance assessment. Many online classes require that exams be administered by a qualified proctor. Now, trained proctors at UNC Asheville's Asheville Graduate Center can provide a variety of tests, from post-graduate to professional exams. The Asheville Graduate Center customizes its services to fit test-takers' needs. Both computer- and paper-based testing services are provided. » MORE

Lorraine Walsh Receives New Media Award to Participate in European Mobile Lab for Interactive Media
    
Walsh was selected to participate in the European Mobile Lab for Interactive Media Artists (e-MobiLArt). The main aim of the e-MobiLArt project is to provide selected new media artists and scientists, coming from different cultural and artistic backgrounds, with the opportunity to collaborate with other artists/scientists in order to create interactive installation artworks, through a process focusing on intercultural and interdisciplinary dialogue. » MORE

UNC Asheville Alumnae Hold Painting Exhibition
     Local painters and UNC Asheville alumnae Shannon Rupert and Gwendolyn Saltz will hold an exhibition of recent work at UNC Asheville's Blowers Gallery. An opening reception for the two May 2008 UNC Asheville graduates will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, June 8, in the gallery. Blue Ridge Naturalist Program Offers Science Workshops for Teachers
     The Blue Ridge Naturalist, a program of the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement, will hold week-long summer workshops for teachers on the UNC Asheville campus. The workshops are open to teachers and others who are interested in earth and environmental science instruction. Those who complete the course will receive 1.5 Continuing Education Units. » MORE

UNC Asheville Celebrates 80th Annual Commencement;
Ceremony Honors the University's Largest Class

     More than 4,000 family and friends gathered on UNC Asheville's Quadrangle Saturday morning to celebrate UNC Asheville's 2008 graduating class, the largest in University history. Some 715 students were honored during the 80th annual Commencement Ceremony, including 467 spring graduates, 215 winter graduates and 33 summer graduates. » MORE

UNC Asheville Student Marks University Milestone as First Third-Generation Graduate
     When UNC Asheville senior Matt Anderson, a music technology major from Asheville, graduates on Saturday, he will mark an important University milestone. Anderson will become UNC Asheville's first third-generation graduate. He will join father Andy Anderson, a physics major from the Class of 1982, and his grandmother Ann Anderson, a 1956 graduate of Asheville-Biltmore College and biology major from UNC Asheville's Class of 1970, in the ranks of the some 13,500 University alumni. » MORE

UNC Asheville Names First Cary Caperton Owen Distinguished Professor in Economics; Professor's Work will Focus on American Poverty Courses, Research
     UNC Asheville Economics Professor Joseph M. Sulock has been named the University's first Cary Caperton Owen Distinguished Professor in Economics. The distinguished professorship was established in October 2007 in honor of Cary Owen, who is known throughout the state as a remarkable champion for public education. It is especially fitting that the distinguished professorship is in the field of economics; Owen was one of the first women to major in economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. » MORE

Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Awards $500,000 to Appalachian College Association; Funds to Support New ACA-UNC Asheville Undergraduate Research Partnership
     Berea, Ky. -- The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded a $500,000 grant to the Appalachian College Association (ACA) that will expand undergraduate research expertise and opportunities for faculty and students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences at more than two dozen colleges in Central Appalachia, ACA President Alice Brown announced today. » MORE

     Jill Yarnall, UNC Asheville Assistant Director of Public Information, recently received the 2008 Best of the Mountains Award for Press Release Writing from the Public Relations Association of Western North Carolina. UNC Asheville Professor Kevin Moorhead Honored for Teaching Excellence by UNC Board of Governors
     One of UNC Asheville's most respected professors, Kevin Moorhead, was named today as a recipient of the Award for Excellence in Teaching from the University of North Carolina's Board of Governors. Moorhead, professor and chair of environmental studies, was nominated by a committee of UNC Asheville faculty. He will receive a commemorative bronze medallion and a $7,500 cash prize at a ceremony at UNC Chapel Hill next month. » MORE

     Six UNC Asheville students recently traveled to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to attend a three-day conference on "Women as Global Leaders."
