Tim Channell, Ed.D.

Bio

Dr. Channell joined UNC Asheville at a pivotal time of continued commitment to a future-facing liberal arts and sciences education. His broad background uniquely positions him to provide support and guidance to areas such as Business, Education, Music, and the Humanities. Dr. Channell brings more than two decades of higher education leadership, fiscal management, and fundraising experience to our campus. Prior to joining UNC Asheville, he served as Interim Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Radford University, where he successfully championed cross-disciplinary initiatives, increased new student enrollment by 21 percent, and managed the complex transition into their landmark 178,000-square-foot interdisciplinary arts complex. He has previously served as Radford’s Assistant Provost for Budget and Academic Operations and as the Chair of the Department of Music, as well as leading a successful SACSCOC reaffirmation.

As our inaugural dean, Dr. Channell oversees our newly expanded academic portfolio and academic programs, serving the departments and programs of Africana Studies, Art/Art History, Business, Economics, Education, English, History, Humanities Program, Interdisciplinary Studies, Languages and Literatures, Music, Mass Communication, Philosophy, Sociology & Anthropology, Political Science, and Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies. He has a proven commitment to shared governance and building robust community partnerships, and will confidently lead our faculty and staff as we continuously strengthen these academic departments and programs, cultivate experiential learning, and remove barriers to student success. Dr. Channell values the extraordinary relationships faculty and staff maintain with students and is committed to supporting this engagement that characterizes the undergraduate educational experience at UNC Asheville.

Dr. Channell says: “I believe that the humanities, arts, and social sciences are central to helping students understand the world by engaging thoughtfully with complex challenges and imagining new possibilities for the future.
