The University of North Carolina Asheville is committed to protecting the privacy of its students, alumni, faculty, and staff. To meet that commitment, the University has developed these guidelines outlining the approved usage of University Data as it comes to the utilization of AI Platforms.
These guidelines apply to all University of North Carolina Asheville Users.
Definitions

Guidelines
Such platforms have been procured by the University and data within the platform is protected by privacy agreements and overarching security controls put in place by the University.
The University provides several Enterprise level AI tools. Only the platforms explicitly listed below are approved to be utilized. These accounts must be set up with University credentials as the content that is generated by these platforms become subject to NC Public Records law. Faculty and Staff may find there is a more preferable model that suits their specific business needs that individual Faculty and/or Staff may pay for themselves. If a user chooses to pay for their own subscription to such a platform and uses the platform on a device that is provided to them by the University, they must opt out of data being entered into the platform to be used for the overall training of the model. Please note that even if a user pays for a separate platform themselves, if they use it for University business, the records generated from such use are likely subject to the NC Public Records Act.
There are several free generative AI platforms available to our community. Below is a list of preferred free public AI Tools. Public AI tools are unpaid and may or may not require registration of a user account. Only public data may be used within these tools as data entered will be utilized in most cases for model training purposes.
