I graduated from UNCA in the spring of 2014. I Currently serve as the Vulnerable Populations Manager for Blue Ridge Health a Federally Qualified Health Center in WNC. In my position I head the outreach efforts across multiple counties in WNC. Some of the services my team offers are focused on helping migrant farmworkers, those experiencing homelessness, those with language barriers, and training new Community Health Workers in our area.
I believe that community is directly tied to health and wellness. Community work requires time and hard work, but the rewards are well worth the effort! It is my work in the community that drove me to both the HWP program and eventually to my MPH degree. Through my work I am able to reach out to communities and help them find a healthier path that can greatly improve their quality of life. I am fortunate that I can spend my time trying to help others live happier and healthier lives.
The Health and Wellness program at UNCA was a great opportunity for me to sharpen my skills and pick up new ones. To current and future students I advise this; it is easy to get overwhelmed with classes, homework, and work. But it's important to remember why you are here. Many of the health problems that our society faces can be fixed through changes in our lifestyle and you can be part of that change! Health and wellness is a great way to start your path toward creating healthier communities.
