Accessibility SpecialistContact Information
Katie Smith graduated from the City University of New York, School of Professional Studies in 2019 with an M.A. in Disability Studies. Along with courses in disability law and policy, and advocacy, Katie's academic research included an exploration of how faculty members can work more effectively with students with disabilities in the college environment. As part of her M.A. program through CUNY SPS, Katie worked in tandem with Radford University's Center for Accessibility Services to provide support for students with various disabilities.
Before coming to UNC-Asheville, Katie worked as an instructor of composition, communication, and literature at Radford University, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
Katie's passion for disability services stems from her own experience as a person with a physical disability.
Katie has tried to make her office (Ramsey 026) as open and welcoming as possible. If you stop by, you'll likely find candy on the desk, some pretty good books on the bookshelf (including some really interesting Young Adult books on disability), and some stimming toys (stress balls, kinetic sand, etc) that might help you de-stress!
Stop in and say hello!
