As a sociologist of art, I have a deep appreciation for the role of the arts in the liberal arts curriculum and in our society. My teaching and research focuses on the visual arts, in particular on questions of reception—how audiences and cultural experts respond to works. In addition, last year I served as Interim Provost at UNC School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, where I learned about the education of performing artists. I am excited to return to UNC Asheville to serve the Arts and Ideas Program, and to support its mission as a critical component of our Liberal Arts Core. I look forward to offering an ARTS course in this coming spring, entitled Representation and Resistance in the Arts.
