John Dougherty joined UNC Asheville in July 2021 and currently serves as the university's Chief of Staff and General Counsel. In this role, he provides advice and counsel to university decisionmakers, including senior staff colleagues and the UNC Asheville Board of Trustees. Prior to UNC Asheville, he spent seven years as an attorney for the University of North Carolina System, providing legal advice to constituent institution counsel, University System administrators, and the UNC Board of Governors.

A North Carolina native, Mr. Dougherty attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned a B.A. in journalism and environmental studies, a master’s degree in intercollegiate sport administration, and his juris doctorate.
