Outdoor Programs

UNC Asheville Outdoor Programs is the outdoor resource for the campus community. We provide diverse co-curricular opportunities to expand horizons through personal growth, social interactions and environmental stewardship. In addition, UNC Asheville Outdoor Programs fosters the development of leadership skills and outdoor ethics in our student leaders and participants.

From land to water and everything in between, UNC Asheville Outdoor Programs has something to offer everyone!  Our program is built on human powered adventure since the 1980s. We are located in the Student Recreation Center, 204. Stop by to register for a trip, workshop, certification training, or check out our extensive line of outdoor gear rental available for all students, faculty and staff.

Outdoor Programs operates within Pisgah National Forest permitting, and we teach and encourage the use of Leave No Trace ethics and strongly advocate for waterfall safety. Join us for a trip and learn more on these outdoor practices, or visit these online resources (North Carolina State Parks Waterfall Safety and Leave No Trace).

Gear & Bike Rentals

Need gear for your next adventure but don’t want to buy it? As a service to the UNC Asheville community, Outdoor Programs rents a variety of quality outdoor equipment at an affordable price to help aid in your next outdoor adventure. Gear is available to all UNC Asheville students, faculty and staff. Our staff can also recommend great local camping, hiking, backpacking, climbing and paddling locations around Western North Carolina.

The UNC Asheville Bike Shop offers bike rentals and free maintenance to all students, faculty, and staff. As an educational shop, expect to stay with your bike during the repair. Our mission is to teach you the skills and know-how to perform your own maintenance in the future. Trained student bike mechanics will be on-hand to assist you with all of your bicycling maintenance needs. Some services, depending on the complexity of the maintenance request and/or if new parts are required, may take longer or require a nominal fee.

Kayak Roll Sessions

Roll sessions are open to the university, and greater public, as a chance to practice skills in a controlled pool environment with lifeguards. The Outdoor Program provides two student instructors in the pool for those who are wanting to learn the basic biomechanics of kayak rolling or paddling (private instruction is not provided). Canoes and sea kayaks are welcome, however our instructors are only prepared to teach the whitewater kayak roll. We have a limited supply of kayaks, paddles, sprayskirts, life jackets and helmets available for anyone to use. Or, bring your own gear to practice with and enjoy!

Skiing

Hit the slopes with Outdoor Programs! Students can take the UNC Asheville shuttles to nearby Sugar Mountain in Boone, NC or to Cataloochee. All levels are welcome.

Outdoor Leadership Training Program

The Outdoor Leadership Training Program (OLTP) empowers students to choose their own path in becoming a leader and growing their outdoor leadership skills. By offering two methods of registration, students are able to fully customize their experience and are able to progress at the speed and depth that they find appropriate for their college experience. OLTP provides classroom and field-based education that will train you to be a competent outdoor trip leader and instructor. Additionally, OLTP is required of all the Campus Recreation Outdoor Programs trip leaders.
