The UNC Asheville Spring Commencement will honor more than 390 students from the 2025 graduating class Saturday, May 10. The ceremony will take place in Kimmel Arena.
This class of graduates is composed of 89 percent in-state students and 11 percent out-of-state students. The youngest graduate is 19 years old, and the oldest is 61. Also graduating will be six international candidates representing Australia, France, Germany, Mexico, Portugal, and Spain.
Psychology and Business are the two most popular majors, with 53 and 32 graduates, respectively. Art, Environmental Science and English rounded out the top five.
The average class cumulative GPA comes out to 3.40.
This year’s Board of Governors Excellence in Teaching award will be presented to Evelyn Chiang, professor of psychology at UNC Asheville.
“Having been here for 18 years, I know that my colleagues are people who are really passionate about teaching,” Chiang said. “It’s a really big honor to be selected because I know I’m surrounded by incredible folks.”
During the ceremony, two local leaders will be recognized with honorary degrees, Bruce Goforth and Janice W. Brumit. Goforth is a former member of the North Carolina House of Representatives and a dedicated member of the Bulldog Athletics Association Board, helping to raise more than $1.5 million in scholarship support for student-athletes. Brumit, who will receive her honorary degree at the December 2025 Commencement ceremony, has been a trailblazer for women in business, and steadfast advocate for education, healthcare, and economic development in Asheville.
“We are honored to recognize Janice Brumit and Bruce Goforth for their extraordinary leadership and service,” UNC Asheville Chancellor Kimberly van Noort said. “Their commitment to improving lives through education, philanthropy, and public service embodies the values we hold dear at UNC Asheville.
