UNC Asheville is proud to host its December Commencement, honoring more than 200 students from the 2025 graduating class at 4 p.m. on Friday, December 13. The ceremony will take place in Kimmel Arena, with doors opening at 2 p.m. A ticket is required for entry.
This class of graduates is composed of 91 percent in-state students and 9 percent out-of-state students. Of the in-state graduates, over half hail from Western North Carolina. Of the out-of-state graduates there is an impressive showing from bordering states Georgia and Virginia, both representing roughly 15 percent of the out-of-state graduating class.
Also graduating will be five international candidates representing Australia, Ireland, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
The youngest graduate is 19 years old, and the oldest is 47.
Psychology and Biology are the two most popular majors, with 31 and 15 graduates, respectively. Health Sciences and Art are tied for third most popular major with 14 graduates each, and English and Environmental Science are tied for fifth with 13 graduates each.
Oscar Wong, founder of Highland Brewing Company, Asheville’s first craft brewery, will be receiving an honorary degree and giving the commencement remarks. The son of Chinese immigrants, born and raised on the island of Jamaica, Wong came to the U.S. in 1959 to earn degrees in civil and structural engineering at the University of Notre Dame.
Wong launched Highland Brewing in 1994, and it has grown into the largest independent, family-owned brewery based in the Southeastern U.S.
Student remarks will be given by Student Government Association Vice-President Alondra Barrera-Hernandez.
The UNC Asheville ceremony, which will be presided over by Chancellor Kimberly van Noort, can be viewed via livestream on UNC Asheville’s YouTube Channel.
