UNC Asheville is proud to announce a transformational $1 million gift from an anonymous distinguished alumnus in support of its Centennial Campaign.
The gift—one of the largest ever made by a graduate of the university—will establish the Woodward Scholars Program, providing robust scholarship support and high-impact academic opportunities for students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
The Woodward Scholars Program will offer $10,000 annual scholarships, along with an additional $10,000 per student to fund immersive experiences such as undergraduate research, internship opportunities, and study abroad opportunities. The program is designed to attract and support high-achieving students, preparing the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators to lead with insight and integrity in a rapidly changing world.
“This extraordinary act of generosity strengthens our Centennial Campaign as a direct investment in our students,” UNC Asheville Chancellor Kimberly van Noort said. “It affirms our mission, and the transformative power of a UNC Asheville education—especially for those ready to lead in fields critical to our collective future.”
Inspired by the university’s liberal arts foundation and the faculty mentorship they received as a student, the anonymous donor is determined to ensure that future generations have access to similar life-changing opportunities, regardless of their financial background.
“Life is short. Share your passion, your wealth, and your time—and mentor young people,” the donor offered.
Graham Reynolds, professor of biology and director of the University Honors Program, emphasized the program’s potential impact.
“This investment allows us to see what’s possible when passion meets opportunity,” Reynolds said. “Our students are bold thinkers and problem-solvers, and this support empowers them to lead with purpose—in the sciences and beyond.”
The $1 million gift is a cornerstone in UNC Asheville’s Centennial Campaign: Raising $100 Million for 100 Years, a bold initiative focused on student success, faculty excellence, and institutional innovation as the University prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2027.
