UNC Asheville Extends Enrollment Deadline to June 1 & Offers Early Enrollment in Summer Classes for Incoming Students

UNC Asheville has extended the enrollment deadline for first-year students to June 1 and is offering incoming students the option to start their classes early this summer, with online courses geared toward getting a step ahead in their college career. Summer session I starts June 8.

Students can select from more than 100 online courses offered in the summer, covering a range of requirements from the Liberal Arts Core and major programs. All classes are taught by faculty, not teaching assistants, connecting students directly with experts and industry professionals skilled at teaching in any format.

“The faculty, staff and students at UNC Asheville are thinking about you, and we want to extend any comfort, care and support you may need at this unusual time in your college journey. Submitting your enrollment deposit is one of the biggest decisions you will make, so we are extending our enrollment deposit deadline to June 1 to give you and your families adequate time to make this very important decision,” said Dean of Admission and Financial Aid and Chief of Staff Shannon Earle.

Once students submit their enrollment deposit, they can apply for on-campus housing and start the registration process.

UNC Asheville’s online summer classes cover many facets of the liberal arts and sciences, including timely topics such as the Census 2020: The Politics of Counting and Grit: The Power of Passion and Resilience. Students can virtually travel the world with Introduction to Global Studies, French I or Spanish I or gain an appreciation for a new subject with Film Appreciation or Music Appreciation. They can focus on Nutrition and Lifestyle or Personal Health and Wellness, and explore the Art and Science of Meditation or The Physics of Sound and Music. Music-minded individuals might check out Tonal Music: Origins and Early Practices, followed by Tonal and Post-Tonal Music, and even online, there’s plenty of dance options with Introduction to Hip Hop & Afro Beat Techniques, Introduction to Dance, and Ballet I. Students seeking an educational approach their screen time will find History of Animation: From Pencils to Pixels, and Video Game Studies.

In addition to four summer sessions, ranging from four- to eight-weeks, UNC Asheville offers Maymester beginning May 11. As one of the intensive, condensed four-week semesters, it gives students the opportunity to complete required credits while making the most of their summer, as courses conclude by June 5. UNC Asheville’s Great Smokies Writing Program also offers four online courses this summer, starting June 8. Each class spans five weeks, and all classes are taught by professional writers. The program is open to writers of all levels. Courses include Snapshots of the Past: A Memoir Workshop; Take Five: A Fiction Workshop; Introduction to Feature Writing Workshop; and a Summer Writing Workout to generate new work. UNC Asheville’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute will also offer 11 online classes this summer as part of the esteemed College for Seniors. The classes cover geology, anthropology, and literature, including Brave New World and Aldous Huxley; A Trio of Thomas Hardy Novels; Ripples from Henry’s Pond: Thoreau’s Freethought Voice; and Hammett, Chandler and the Birth of the Hard-Boiled Detective. OLLI members can also explore The Science of Happiness; The Mysteries of History; Piano Fun; Joan Baez: Queen of Folk; and The Psychology of Human-Animal Relationships. Online course tuition is significantly lower than in-person courses, and for in-state students may result in savings up to half the cost of traditional classes. Visiting students may also enroll in classes this summer or through the fall. UNC Asheville currently has more than 1,000 courses scheduled over these semesters. Transfer students are also encouraged to submit their enrollment deposit by June 1.
