UNC Asheville Board of Trustees to Meet August 22, 2019, Welcoming New Trustee Peter Hall Heckman

The UNC Asheville Board of Trustees will meet from 11-11:45 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2019, in the Sherrill Center, Ingles Mountain View Room on the university campus. The meeting will include the swearing-in of newly appointed board member Peter Hall Heckman and of reappointed trustee Wilma M. Sherrill who is serving her second four-year term. At the conclusion of its meeting, the Board of Trustees will hold an afternoon retreat for board development that will continue Friday morning, Aug.23, also in the Sherrill Center.

The appointment of Heckman came at the recommendation of N.C. Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger and reappointment of Sherrill came at the recommendation of N.C. Speaker of the House Tim Moore.

A Buncombe County resident, Heckman retired as the president and CEO of Horace Mann Companies, an Illinois-based auto, property, life insurance and financial service company, where he served for more than 12 years. Prior to that position, he served as a vice president and CEO of Allstate Life Insurance Company for almost three decades. He holds an undergraduate degree in business administration and MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern, and he has served on the Board of the Springfield, Illinois Public Schools Foundation and the NEA Foundation for the Improvement of Education.

A Buncombe County resident and Yadkin County native, Sherrill served as an elected member of the North Carolina House of Representatives from 1994 until 2006. Prior to her elected service, she was commissioner of motor vehicles for the State of North Carolina and served as director of boards, commissions and personnel appointments for Governor Jim Martin. She attended Elkin Business College and Wake Forest University and received an honorary degree in civil engineering from A-B Technical Community College. The Wilma M. Sherrill Center at UNC Asheville honors her advocacy for the health and wellbeing of children and families.

UNC Asheville’s Board of Trustees is comprised of 13 members, including the president of the university’s Student Government Association, who serves ex-officio. UNC Asheville board meetings are open to the public. Portions of the meeting may be closed to the public under the provisions of the North Carolina Open Meetings Act.
