The University of North Carolina Asheville is proud to announce that Janice W. Brumit and Daniel Bruce Goforth will be recognized with honorary degrees. Goforth will receive his during the University’s May 2025 Commencement Ceremony, and Brumit will receive hers at the December 2025 ceremony.
These distinguished individuals have made enduring contributions to Western North Carolina through their leadership, philanthropy, and deep commitment to education.
Daniel Bruce Goforth
Goforth is a former member of the North Carolina House of Representatives and a lifelong resident of Asheville. A contractor by trade, Goforth served nearly four terms representing Buncombe County and has long demonstrated a deep commitment to the community and to UNC Asheville.
Goforth has been a dedicated member of the Bulldog Athletics Association Board for over a decade and has chaired the BAA Scholarship Golf Classic, helping to raise more than $1.5 million in scholarship support for student-athletes. Together with his wife, he also established an endowed scholarship at the University.
As noted in his nomination by UNC Asheville Director of Athletics Janet Cone, “He and his wife are passionate about helping the underserved and see education as one of the most important components to future success.”
Janice W. Brumit
A Boone native and lifelong North Carolinian, Brumit has been a transformative force in business and community development. The first in her family to attend college, Brumit earned a scholarship to Appalachian State University and went on to build a successful career as co-owner of 70 Arby’s franchises across the Carolinas with her husband, Joe. Beyond business success, the Brumits have been champions for children and families, providing meals to youth during summers and school breaks.
Brumit has been a trailblazer in Asheville, becoming the first woman to chair the Asheville Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. She is a founding member of Women for Women, a philanthropic group that has invested over $5 million in local initiatives supporting women and girls. A steadfast advocate for education, healthcare, and economic development, Brumit has served as Chair of the UNC Asheville Board of Trustees and on the UNC Asheville Foundation Board. She and her husband have generously supported scholarships, athletics, and major capital projects at the university. As she often says: “Education is the great equalizer.”
“We are honored to recognize Janice Brumit and Bruce Goforth for their extraordinary leadership and service,” UNC Asheville Chancellor Kimberly van Noort said. “Their commitment to improving lives through education, philanthropy, and public service embodies the values we hold dear at UNC Asheville. They are both true champions for Western North Carolina and inspiring role models for our graduates.”
The May 2025 Commencement Ceremony will celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates and these remarkable honorary degree recipients on May 10 in Kimmel Arena on UNC Asheville’s campus.
