September 18, 2023

U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best Colleges list has once again awarded UNC Asheville a top-10 position in the nation, with a #9 ranking in the Top Public Schools – National Liberal Arts Colleges category.

Additionally, UNC Asheville placed among the top 100 for social mobility, a category that rates success in advancing economically disadvantaged students through enrolling and graduating students awarded Pell Grants. This is the fifth year in a row UNC Asheville has received acknowledgment for its commitment to social mobility.

The number of Pell-eligible students in the current incoming class nearly doubled from last year (increasing 97 percent), comprising more than one third (36 percent) of all incoming first-time students. Related, more than one quarter of new first-time students (28 percent) are first-generation, representing a 48 percent increase over the previous year.

UNC Asheville also tied with two other institutions for #139 in the overall ranking for the National Liberal Arts Colleges category.

The undergraduate engineering, computer science and psychology programs also performed well in their categories, earning rankings of #138, #265 and #181 in the nation, respectively.

UNC Asheville’s commendable standing among public liberal arts institutions is a testament to its focus on interdisciplinary education, hands-on learning, undergraduate research and open-minded classrooms.
