OLLI’s Reuter Center Singers Pay Tribute to Mountain Music Heritage in Concerts May 4 and 5 at UNC Asheville

The Reuter Center Singers – the community chorus of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNC Asheville – will perform two concerts dedicated to mountain music heritage, at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, and 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at the Reuter Center on campus. Admission is free; donations at the door are welcome and light refreshments will follow the concerts.

Themed “Dear Appalachia: Our Mountain Music Heritage,” the concerts will explore the song traditions of Appalachia, including folk songs and ballads, African-American spirituals and blues, and country gospel – music of different styles that reflect the region’s diversity of cultural backgrounds.

Selections will include Sourwood Mountain, Poor Wayfaring Stranger, Shenandoah, Soldier’s Joy, The Unclouded Day/Will the Circle Be Unbroken, Travelin’ Thru, Old Dan Tucker, Go ‘Way from My Window, Sun is Gonna Shine, and more.

Chuck Taft, who has directed the choir for its full 20-year history, will conduct. Nora Vetro will accompany on the piano.

The Reuter Center Singers work to foster connections among members and the community at large and welcome new members, with rehearsals Monday evenings from 6:15-8:15 p.m. at the Reuter Center.
