In 2022, four North Carolinians over the age of 65 died every day from a fall. Falls are not a normal part of aging, and most falls are preventable.
In an effort to address one of the most pressing health concerns facing older adults, the NC Falls Prevention Coalition is proud to announce the upcoming Falls Prevention Conference: Steps to Age Well – Cultivating a Falls Prevention Culture Across the Lifespan. Scheduled to take place on April 25 at the Eastern Area Health Education Center in Greenville, NC, this event will bring together leading experts, healthcare professionals, researchers, caregivers, and community members to explore innovative strategies and solutions to prevent falls.
Falls among older adults represent a significant public health challenge, often resulting in severe injuries, reduced quality of life, and increased healthcare costs.
Steps to Age Well – Cultivating a Falls Prevention Culture Across the Lifespan aims to address this critical issue through a series of engaging presentations, panel discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from experts in the field, exchange best practices, and discover innovative approaches to falls prevention.
Key topics to be covered during the conference include:
- The family’s role in preventing falls for members of all ages and abilities.
- Best practices for provider-patient conversations related to fall risk and prevention.
- Interventions to prevent/reduce falls in a nursing home setting.
- Falls prevention strategies among special populations.
- Clinical and community partnerships.
- Driver safety and falls risk.
- Vestibular rehabilitation and how it impacts falls prevention in older adults.
“We are thrilled to bring together a diverse group of partners to discuss falls prevention and share insights on how we can collectively work towards reducing the risk of falls among older adults,” said Ellen Bailey, senior project manager at the NC Center for Health and Wellness.
“By fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange, we hope to empower communities and healthcare professionals to implement effective strategies that can help older adults live safer, healthier lives. We are also grateful and excited to collaborate with our co-hosts, the Eastern NC Falls Prevention Coalition, led by Mary Hall at ECU Health, to highlight the great work happening in Eastern NC as well.”
The Falls Prevention Conference is open to healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers, caregivers, community members, and anyone interested in advancing falls prevention efforts. Continuing education credits will be available for physical therapists.
