Ten UNC Asheville students will have the opportunity to intern with nonprofit and government organizations focused on improving life in rural North Carolina for a diverse array of residents. Their internships this summer will be funded by the SECU Public Fellows Internship program, with a $50,000 award to UNC Asheville. Each student can earn up to $5,000 for a full-time internship, which is comparable to earning $15 an hour.

To be eligible for the SECU Public Fellows Internship at UNC Asheville, students must:

  • be residents of North Carolina
  • be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at UNC Asheville
  • submit a resume to include leadership and volunteer service
  • submit a cover letter to include career goals and explain how they are uniquely qualified for the SECU Public Fellows Internship program.

Students can review the internship job descriptions and apply via this link: https://unca.joinhandshake.com/jobs/3540897/share_preview. The deadline to apply is March 16.

UNC Asheville SECU Public Fellows Internship Sites for Summer 2020 include Buncombe County Soil and Water, Mountain BizWorks, ASAP Connections, United Way, Asheville Humane Society, Manna Food Bank, Girl Scouts Peaks to Piedmont, Forest Keeper, Working Wheels, and Habitat for Humanity.

“During the internships, students will complete midterm and final evaluations with their internship site supervisors and meet twice in person as a group, which will allow them to share their experiences with one another, and provide a further powerful means of reflection and connection between internships and organizations serving rural North Carolina,” said Career Center Director Lisa Mann.
