Event Navigation

TheatreUNCA will stage two virtual performances of The 3 Pigs & The Red Line, is a family-friendly adaptation of the classic fable, The Three Little Pigs, inspired by the history of redlining and urban renewal in Asheville’s Black community. The 3 Pigs will stream via Zoom at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 16, and again at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 18.

Told through the magic of toy theatre, combining student- and faculty-created shadow puppets, paper puppets and crankies, The Three Pigs and the Red Line aims to spark a conversation around Asheville’s complicated history and how it continues to affect those living in this community today. The show will feature a watch of pre-recorded content followed by a curated conversation with special local guests Renee White and Crystal Sheriff from The Asheville-Buncombe Community Land Trust.

“When storytellers are working with complicated ideas that may cause discomfort, we look to produce delight as a way to draw them in,” said UNC Asheville Adjunct Lecturer of Drama Aaron Snook, who directs the play. “It is also one of toy theatre’s great strengths. So, with the goal of sparking a conversation around the unjust history of redlining and urban renewal, we look to this medium to deliver our story.”

The student cast and crew includes Kiah Dale, Nick Lock, Alex Mbuthia, Laura Olls, Lindsey Ratliff, Maggie Schall, Jada Smith, Dana Stewart and Ray Williams. The production team includes student student Mikayla Wilson as assistant director, Associate Professor of Drama Rob Berls as production manager, student Carolina Perez as sound designer and student Brónagh O’Shea as stage manager.

The 3 Pigs & The Red Line performances are free, with donations accepted; suggested donations are $3 for students and $9 for general audiences. For information and tickets visit https://drama.unca.edu/engage/theatreunca.
