OLLI Fab Fridays Lunch & Learn Lectures: Optimal Management of Type 2 Diabetes and Prediabetes in 2021 – Panel

May 14, 2021 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm

Event Navigation

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNC Asheville will host a panel to discuss Diabetes on May 14 at 11:30 a.m. as part of its Fab Friday series.

Type 2 diabetes is one of the most prevalent diseases among older Americans. Uncontrolled type 2 diabetes and/or excess weight are risk factors for Covid-19. CDC estimates that one quarter of the 34 million Americans with diabetes are over 65 (most have type 2). Another 24 million of the estimated 88 million Americans with prediabetes are over 65. Type 2 diabetes management has changed dramatically due to an evolved understanding of the disease onset and progression, new categories of glucose-lowering medications, and the advent of technologies to deliver insulin and monitor glucose. A panel of three seasoned Asheville-based Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (CDCES) cover these topics along with information about management programs around Asheville. Panel members are: Bill Flynn, MA, BSN, RN, diabetes clinician at Mission Health System;  Autumn Steen, PharmD, BCACP, CPP, clinical pharmacist in diabetes, Mission Health System; and  Hope Warshaw, MMSc, RD,  BC-ADM, Diabetes and Nutrition Management Consultant.
