The 16th Annual New Media Student Show, a juried exhibition featuring innovative work by UNC Asheville students, will be on view April 19-29 in Zeis Hall, in the second floor lobby. The exhibit opens with a reception from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on April 19. The exhibition and reception are both free and open to everyone. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-9 p.m. weekdays and noon-6 p.m. on the weekend.
The exhibit opening is part of the university’s Spring 2019 Arts Fest. The exhibition will remain on view through the week-long celebration of the Installation of UNC Asheville Chancellor Nancy J. Cable.
The juror for this year’s show is Dave Pruiksma, who has worked in the animation industry for nearly 40 years, 20 of which spent as a supervising animator and mentor, animating on modern classic films and training new talent at Walt Disney Feature Animation during the studio’s animation renaissance from 1981 to 2001.
The corral of characters Pruiksma developed and helped bring to life during his time at Disney Feature Animation include, Mrs Potts and Chip from Beauty and the Beast, the Sultan from Aladdin, Flounder and the Seahorse Messenger from The Little Mermaid, Flit the hummingbird from Pocahontas, Victor and Hugo the gargoyles from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Harcourt and Packard from Atlantis, Bernard and Bianca from Rescuers Down Under, Buzzy from Cranium Command, and many more.
Pruiksma retired from Disney Feature Animation in 2001. He spent the past 10 years training a new generation of animators as a professor at Laguna College of Art and Design in Laguna Beach, California, where he was instrumental in developing the school’s now highly regarded animation program.
