November 20, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Event Navigation
Acclaimed Iranian musician and master calligrapher Bahman Panahi will perform Persian classical music at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20 in the Highsmith Student Union Grotto. This event is free and open to the public.
Panahi will introduce and demonstrate the Persian dastgah modal system on tar – a plucked six-stringed instrument with moveable frets – and setar, a three-stringed instrument with an additional drone string. Iranian classical music involves both improvisation and composition in seven modes, or dastgah.
A graduate of Tehran University in fine arts and also a calligrapher, Panahi moved to Paris where he has lived since 2002, continuing his art studies at Ecole des Beaux-arts and the Sorbonne.
Panahi also will lecture on Persian calligraphy at noon on Thursday, Nov. 21 in Karpen Hall, Laurel Forum; this lecture also is free.
