Critical Perspectives Presents: Dr. Erin James, “Building the World with Narrative in an Era of Climate Change”

Venue

Highsmith Student Union, Blue Ridge Room South (203)

April 14 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Event Navigation

At 5:30 p.m. in the Blue Ridge South room in Highsmith Student Union, Erin James will talk about her work on narrative and climate change.

Drawing upon cognitive science and narrative theory, James argues that reading transports us to new worlds, as we construct models of unique worlds and inhabit them while reading. This notion, further, has real-world consequences: we are building our world via climate change, a process informed by our narrative practices. There will be time afterward for questions.

Erin James is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Idaho. She is the author of “The Storyworld Accord: Econarratology and Postcolonial Narratives” and “Narrative in the Anthropocene.”

This event is part of the English department’s Critical Perspectives series, which brings scholars to UNC Asheville to speak on their field of expertise.
