Philosopher Martha C. Nussbaum will be interviewed by UNC Asheville Professor of Philosophy Brian E. Butler, in the 2020 Frederic R. and Molly S. Kellogg Biennial Lecture in Jurisprudence, presented online this year by the Library of Congress. This event is free and open to all, with limited registration at this link, on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 3 p.m.

The topic will be “Philosophy and Life: Fragility, Emotions, Capabilities.”

Nussbaum is the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics appointed in the Law School and Philosophy Department at the University of Chicago where she is also an associate in the Classics Departmentthe Divinity School, and the Political Science Department, a member of the Committee on Southern Asian Studies, and a board member of the Human Rights Program.

Her most recent book is The Cosmopolitan Tradition: A Noble but Flawed Ideal, published in 2019. She has written 20 other books, edited 21 books and published more than 450 articles. She will be the first woman to be the featured speaker for the Kellogg Lecture. More information about Nussbaum and this event is available on the Library of Congress website.

Butler earned a J.D. at the University of Chicago, and has both a Ph.D and MA in philosophy, and an MFA and BFA in fine arts (painting). He has been a member of UNC Asheville’s faculty for 20 years.
