Advanced Skywarn Spotter Training
April 23 @ 6:30 pm
FreeEvent Navigation
UNC Asheville’s Department of Atmospheric Sciences will host an advanced Skywarn storm-spotter training course at 6:30 p.m. on April 23, at UNC Asheville’s Robinson Hall, room 125.
Thomas Winesett of the Greenville-Spartanburg National Weather Service Forecast Office will lead the two-hour course. Representatives from emergency response agencies, amateur radio operators, and interested weather watchers are encouraged to attend. The advanced topics will include severe weather sounding analysis, instability, wind shear, thunderstorm types, and flash flooding.
The event is free and open to the public. The course will be more technical in nature than a typical basic or advanced spotter course and focus specifically on the science and structure of tornadoes and supercell Thunderstorms, but those with any level of knowledge and experience with meteorology are welcome.
Skywarn storm spotter volunteers provide timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service. Storm spotters provide essential information for all types of weather hazards, though their main responsibility is to identify and describe severe local storms.
