The Jump Start Program provides you with the opportunity to be a part of a structured learning community for the fall semester, learn about UNC Asheville and college expectations, and develop the necessary skills to help you transition smoothly to your first year of college.
Who participates in Jump Start?
Jump Start is available by invitation only. Students who participate in Jump Start come from all backgrounds and levels of academic preparation. Select students are offered admission to Jump Start by the Office of Admission & Financial Aid through the application process of admission. If selected for Jump Start, these students must attend as a required condition of their fall enrollment.
How many people are in Jump Start?
There is a restriction on the number of students who can be placed in Jump Start related to the number of seats in the academic structures of the program. As such, a Jump Start Wait List may be used to control access to the program in response to the university’s national popularity.
How much is Jump Start?
Jump start has fees that primarily cover the costs of housing, room, and board for the two weeks or so that you will live on campus before the start of the semester. The cost is $800 for those two weeks, and the cost will be added to your fall semester bill. There’s no up front cost to you for Jump Start other than the regular enrollment deposit of $300 that all students pay to secure their place at UNC Asheville.
What if I was originally admitted to SOAR?
UNC Asheville has combined its two summer strategies into one, comprehensive program. Students who had been admitted to SOAR have been added to the Jump Start program. SOAR has been discontinued. Now, as Jump Start students, you won’t have to give up a chunk of their summer; they don’t have to submit a separate FAFSA for the summer; and the costs associated with doing the program this new way have provided and incredible savings to families.
What is the Jump Start program like?
Jump Start provides you with intensive academic preparation and is supported with dedicated faculty and staff. Participants will have specialized guidance, mentoring, and academic support.
How does the program work?
Jump Start students will launch their fall semester approximately two weeks early to develop the coaching and mentoring relationships with UNC Asheville faculty and staff. Jump Start students will take the same amount of fall courses as other students, but the availability of personal coaching and mentoring support will be greater.
What classes will I take?
You will take required classes with your fellow Jump Start students that will count towards UNC Asheville’s Liberal Arts Core (LAC) requirements.
Where will I live and what will I do?
You will choose the residence hall you would like to live in through the existing room selection process available on the Housing website. You can even select your own roommate, if you already have someone in mind. Also, there will be educational and social programs that you will be required to attend with your fellow Jump Start participants.
When does Jump Start begin?
Jump Start typically begins two weeks before the fall semester starts. Students will be able to move into their fall residence hall room and participate in academic preparation and leadership development experience. (NOTE: You’ll not be able to participate in the Pre-RendezBlue program activities.)
Can I apply for Financial Aid?
Yes! All Jump Start participants are eligible to apply for financial aid like every other student at UNC Asheville. Visit our Financial Aid website for details about the FAFSA and the Financial Aid process. Students should complete the FAFSA as soon as possible to help maximize the resources available to them.
