GradPlan is a web-based tool to help students and advisors monitor progress toward degree completion. GradPlan looks at degree requirements and coursework completed to produce an easy-to-read audit, or worksheet. The worksheet is divided into blocks to easily outline what courses and requirements are complete, in-progress, or still needed. GradPlan also allows students and their advisors to plan for future coursework. GradPlan is designed to enhance the academic advising process and is not intended to replace face-to-face academic advising. Advisors can use GradPlan to make notes on what they’ve discussed with their advisees. These notes are visible to the students and to other advisors, so everyone will have easy access to what has been discussed.
GradPlan helps you:
- Determine what requirements you need to fulfill in order to complete your degree.
- Identify what requirements you have completed.
- View individual course grades, cumulative grade-point average (GPA), and major GPA.
- View transfer credits, waivers, and exceptions applied toward degree.
- See how your coursework could be applied toward another major, minor, or concentration using the What If option.
- Project how grades earned will affect your GPA using the GPA calculators.
- Confirm academic standing.
- Determine whether there are holds on a student record.
- Estimate how many semesters it will take to graduate.
- Plan future course schedules utilizing the Look Ahead option to see how the selections will affect the progress towards the degree.
- Learn the prerequisites and co-requisites for courses by clicking on the course numbers.

Is GradPlan my official degree audit?
This degree audit is a tool that you may use for assessing your progress toward your degree and for planning your future course work. Although we endeavor to assure that the information in the degree audit report is accurate, it is not an official transcript of your academic record and it is not an official notification of completion of degree requirements. You should contact the Registrar’s Office for your official degree conferral status or to obtain a copy of your academic transcript. We also encourage you to read the UNC Asheville Course Catalog for more detail on degree and major requirements, as well as course descriptions. If you need assistance interpreting GradPlan, please contact your academic advisor. Final responsibility for meeting graduation requirements lies with the student.
Who is my advisor?
You can find your advisor’s name at the top left of the audit. If there is no name or the name appearing is incorrect, please email the Academic Success Center at firstname.lastname@example.org.
What are Residency Requirements?
With some exceptions, coursework is defined as “in residence” when registration is through the University. The following types of courses, however, are not considered in residence: transfer credit, credit by examination, or credit for military experience. To graduate from UNC Asheville, an undergraduate student must complete the following in residence:
- The final thirty (30) semester hours
- At least 25% of the credit hours required for the degree
- One-half of the required semester hours in the major, two-thirds of the major if a post-baccalaureate student seeking a second degree
- One-half of the hours required for a minor (if applicable)
- Individual academic programs may specify particular courses that must be taken in residence. A student who intends to transfer coursework from other institutions should consult the program of study for her or his intended degree program.
Can I register for classes in GradPlan?
No. GradPlan is a snapshot of courses in-progress, planned, and in academic history. Registration will continue to be handled through the Student Services tab of OnePort.
I repeated a course. How will it appear on the audit?
If you successfully repeat a course using grade replacement, only your last attempt counts toward degree requirements. The earlier attempt(s) will be placed in an “insufficient” category at the bottom of your audit. The courses in this area do not count toward your total hours, and they cannot be used to fulfill requirements.
Note: If you are repeating a course in which you previously earned credit (grade of C-, D, etc.), GradPlan will count the hours from both attempts in your total hours until the credit originally earned is removed at the end of the semester when grades are recorded and the original hours are removed. It’s important to take this into account when looking at the earned hours to determine if you’ll have the minimum required to graduate.
How does GradPlan decide where to place courses that I’ve completed?
GradPlan looks at your program and places each course using a “best fit” scenario. The “best fit” process will not always be perfect, particularly when multiple possibilities exist. Classes may apply to different sections as you take more courses. If you have a course that does not appear in the area in which you expected, contact your advisor for assistance.
GradPlan placed one of my courses in two different places. Is that okay?
In most cases, yes. GradPlan is programmed to recognize that some courses can fulfill more than one requirement. The course credits and the course grade will apply only once, even if it is used for more than one requirement. If you have any questions, contact your advisor.
I have been cleared for graduation, but GradPlan says that I haven’t completed all my requirements. Does this mean that I won’t be able to graduate?
Not necessarily. This can be a timing issue such as posting of grades for the current term. If you have followed through on any requirements you were told to complete, you should still be on track for graduation. The University Registrar’s Office can assist you on questions regarding graduation clearance.
If all the boxes are checked, does that mean I’m graduating?
Not necessarily. If you have applied to graduate, The University Registrar’s Office performs a final graduation audit and communicates any missing requirements to the student.
What is the What If Function?
The What If function is a GradPlan feature that allows a student to select a major, minor, concentration or licensure area that they might be interested in pursuing to see how their completed and registered coursework would fulfill the requirements for that possible program.
What is the GPA Calculator?
There are three different GPA calculators in GradPlan. The Major GPA feature appears below the major requirements and lists the major courses that are calculated. The Term Calculator and Advice Calculator appear on a separate tab and help you to determine how to reach a desired GPA. The Term Calculator helps you to predict what your GPA will be for the current semester based on the grades you think you will earn in each class. Please note that the GPA is computed only on the basis of coursework taken at UNC Asheville. Also, some grades, such as “S” (Satisfactory), “W” (Withdrawal), and “IP” (In-Progress) are not counted in the GPA. In addition, courses for which a grade replacement has been or will be allowed when a repeat form is filed will also not count in the cumulative GPA. It is important that you read the instructions on each GPA calculator carefully to be sure you are entering the credits that will actually count in your GPA; if repeats for a grade replacement are involved, we recommend that you check your results with an advisor.
What is the Look Ahead feature?
Look Ahead is a tool for you to arrange course requirements into future semester blocks. You and your advisor may find this helpful as you plan your academic career. Courses entered using the Look-Ahead are not saved, but you can see them placed on your audit next to any requirement they will fulfill.
How current will my information be in GradPlan?
The information in GradPlan is refreshed each night. Any changes made today (e.g., grade changes or classes added/dropped) will be seen in GradPlan tomorrow. If your information is not up-to-date, there could be paperwork that needs to be completed. For example, if you have completed transfer courses, it is possible that the university has not received an official transcript or the coursework is pending departmental review. A substitution or waiver for a course requirement may not have been processed yet. Check with your advisor or the Academic Success Center to confirm the status of a petition.
Can I see a list of all of the classes that I’ve taken and how many classes I have left to fulfill my requirements?
Yes, to see a printable list of courses taken at UNC Asheville, as well as transfer courses, go to the Worksheet tab and click on the Class History link at the top. To identify requirements that you still need to complete, you may look for unchecked boxes in the main “Student View” worksheet, or you may select “Registration Checklist” from the drop-down box under “Format” and click on the “Process New” button. GradPlan is laid out in block format displaying information about degree, major, minor and concentration requirements.
How can I update information?
You cannot update course information in GradPlan. To change your major/minor/concentration, please submit a completed Declaration form.
What if I have a double major/degree/concentration, but only one is listed?
Each major and minor is broken out into individual requirement blocks within the audit, and will appear in different sections with blue headings throughout the audit. Students should be able to locate each area by scrolling through the entire audit and checking these blue headings carefully. If pursuing two majors under the same degree (e.g., BA Psychology and Sociology), both majors will be noted in the box near the top of the audit and will appear in the body of the audit in the order noted at the top of the audit. Students pursuing a second major in a different degree (e.g., BA in Psychology and BS in Biology) will need to click on the Degree drop-down box at the top of the Student View audit in order to view the additional requirements. If the second degree is not an option in the drop down, the major may not have been officially added. The student can declare their major online here.
What if I have issues accessing GradPlan on my computer?
Try to switch to another browser (GradPlan is not compatible with older versions of Safari), check pop-up blockers, or try to clear cache and cookies. If you are unsure how to do this, click on the Help menu on your browser. If you are still having trouble contact the IT Help Desk at 828.251.6445.
