- Permanent employees working 30 or more hours per week are eligible for all benefits.
- Permanent part-time employees working 20 – 29 hours per week are eligible to participate in supplemental benefits such as NCFlex, supplemental retirement (403b, 457), pro-rated leave and contributory health insurance.
- In benefit programs that provide coverage for dependents, spouses are eligible for coverage under all benefit programs and dependent children are eligible for coverage up to age 26. Stepchildren may also be eligible.
- Coverage for most benefit programs begins the first of the month following the date of hire.
Leave and Holidays
The university recognizes that it is important for employees to have time away from work. The State of North Carolina authorizes 12 holidays each year, three of which must fall at Christmas. The campuses of the UNC system observe the same number of holidays as those provided to other state agencies; however, each campus sets its own specific holiday schedule based on institutional needs.
Vacation leave is accrued by eligible employees who are working, on paid leave, or on Workers’ Compensation leave and meet one of the criteria below.
Employees in regular, also called permanent, staff positions (“permanent employees”) regularly scheduled to work at least 20 or more hours per week, and who are in pay status for at least one-half of the days in a month, are eligible to earn vacation leave. Full-time staff (40 hours per week) earn vacation and sick leave.
Staff who work less than 40 hours per week earn leave on a pro-rated basis according to the number of scheduled work hours each week.
In addition to holidays, vacation and sick leave, various other leave options are available to eligible employees including Family and Medical Leave, Family Illness Leave, Community Service Leave, Civil Leave, Military Leave, and Voluntary Shared Leave.
UNC Asheville offers medical insurance through the North Carolina Blue Cross Blue Shield State Health Plan and supplemental insurance policies through the NC Flex program.

Everyone’s financial goals, needs and savings strategies are different. Recognizing those differences, our employees may choose between two retirement programs for their mandatory retirement plan.
Participation in a mandatory retirement plan is required for permanent, probationary and time-limited employees who work at least ¾ time for nine months or more. Employees contribute 6% of their salaries toward the cost of their retirement.
UNC Asheville has a variety of supplemental retirement plans to help employees meet their retirement goals.
Education Benefits and Tuition Waiver
UNC Asheville is committed to attracting, retaining and developing top talent. Educational assistance programs are designed to encourage professional growth and support workforce planning and development.
Eligible staff may receive partial reimbursement for tuition, fees and books for career related courses taken at any North Carolina public institution, if funding is available.
The Tuition Waiver Program provides an opportunity for eligible faculty and staff to have tuition waived for up to 3 courses taken at any of the constituent institutions of The University of North Carolina system. Participation is voluntary and courses may be taken for career development or for personal interest.
For courses taken at UNC Asheville, fees are also waived.
