UNC Asheville
University Writing Center

Your appointment is for 45 minutes of one-to-one consultation with a UWC staff member about a piece of your writing. Our staff take a few minutes at the beginning of the appointment to get to know you and then ask about the assignment you are working on. Bringing in a written description of the assignment will help our staff do their best work.

You will tell us what your concerns are with this particular piece of writing, and we will work together to address those concerns. If you already have written something, we will read that writing aloud together. If you have not yet written, we will be happy to discuss your project with you. You are encouraged to take notes on staff comments or suggestions.

After the appointment, the UWC staff member writes a report about what happened during the appointment hour. This note is an objective statement and not an evaluation. If you request, we send a copy of the report to your teacher. The faculty at UNCA support the development of strong writing skills and believe that going to the University Writing Center assists the development of those skills. Reports from the UWC are one way faculty know that their students are serious about becoming effective writers.

Writers who drop in without an appointment can bring brief questions for consultation with the available UWC staff member. Typically, no reports are sent for drop-in writers.

We consult with students, faculty, and staff about both academic and personal writing.
