Abstract (250 words max)
Your abstract should:
a) communicate specific information from your research
project or creative work.
b)
include the purpose, methods, and scope of your research or
creative work.
c)
provide the research project’s or creative work’s results,
conclusions, and recommendations.
d)
be short (250 words)
An effective abstract has the following qualities:
a) uses one or more well developed paragraphs: these are
unified, coherent, concise and able to stand alone.
b) uses an introduction/body/conclusion structure which
presents the article, paper, or report’s purpose, results,
conclusions, and recommendations in that order.
c) follows strictly the chronology of the article, paper, or
report.
d) provides logical connections (or transitions) between the
information included.
e) adds no new information, but simply summarizes the research
or work.
f) is understandable to a wide audience.
g) uses passive verbs to downplay the author and emphasize the
information. Check with your advisor if you are unsure
whether or not to use passive voice.

Statement of the Faculty Research Advisor. The
faculty research advisor should provide a statement (not to
exceed 350 words). This statement should be an endorsement of
the student's research which is to be presented at the Second
Big South Symposium, April 9 - 10, 2010. The
statement should also state the value of this student
attending and making a presentation at the Big South
Symposium.. The faculty advisor should send
his/her statement to
