Programs
UNC Asheville maintains a variety of programs designed not only to reduce the need for Single Occupant Vehicles (SOVs), but also to meet the transportation needs of of students, faculty and staff. To learn more about the programs we have developed, click on the links below.
CAP
The UNC Asheville CAP is designed to encourage non-residential students, faculty and staff to use alternative modes of transportation (walking, biking, mass transit, carpooling) when travelling to campus. The program aims to limit the number of times someone drives to campus. As a CAP member, you will be eligible for:
- 10 FREE Day parking permits (worth $10)
- 25 FREE mountain bike rentals from the UNC Asheville Cycle Shop (worth $60)
- discounts with local merchants through a unique partnership with the City of Asheville's WAY TO GO! Commuter Club
- the opportunity to enroll in the City of Asheville’s Emergency Ride Home (ERH) program
If you are interested in this program, fill out the form and return it to the Transportation Office: CAP registration form.

Remember, if you enroll in the Commuter Assistance Program, we'll take care of the registrations for both the Way to Go! Commuter Club and the ERH program for you.
Med Cab Program
What is the Med Cab Program?
Med Cab allows students without access to, or who are unable to use a vehicle a FREE taxi ride to a designated medical facility
or pharmacy to pick up a prescription or other medical supplies. The Med Cab program is available for emergencies, when
all other transportation options (biking, walking, carpooling, taking transit) are not feasible.
How Med Cab works:
When a medical emergency arises, call:
- University Police, (828) 251-6710, or
- Student Health Services, (828) 251-6520, or
- Student Health and Counseling Center, (828) 251-6517
One of these offices must call for the Med Cab taxi and authorize its use.
You must have your OneCard available. The taxi driver will have you read and sign an invoice.
Your only cost is a ‘suggested’ tip to the taxi driver: students will not be charged for Med Cab service.
Emergency Ride to Campus (ERC) Program
What is the ERC Program?
The Emergency Ride to Campus (ERC) program provides students that regularly carpool,
bike, walk, or take transit the benefit of an emergency ride back to campus if those
transportation options are unavailable. Students can only take an ERC ride a limited
number of times per semester (three times for freshmen, one time for all other students).
Any charges related to the misuse of the program will be charged to the individual students’ UNC Asheville account.
If Asheville Transit services the location at the time, the ERC ride cannot be used.
Who is eligible to participate in the ERC program?
To be eligible for the program, students must have an "ERC - 09/10" sticker on their OneCard.
Stickers are available from University Police, or from the Transportation Office, located in 210 Highsmith University Union.
The student must have used one of the following alternative transportation options to get off campus on the same day as using the ERC program:
- ridesharing (vanpool/carpool)
- mass transit
- bicycling
- walking
The taxi ride cannot be more than 25 miles from campus (one way). Taxi drivers are not required to pick you up if you are disorderly, disrespectful or unreasonable. No smoking or alcohol is permitted in the taxi.
