The following information should give you a better idea of how our Teaching Fellows program here at UNC Asheville works, as well as how it compares to other existing programs for Fellows in Universities throughout North Carolina.

Why UNCA is Unique

  • UNCA is North Carolina's only designated public liberal arts university.

  • Small by choice, UNCA brings together faculty, students, and staff of diverse cultural backgrounds to interact closely in a supportive community.

UNCA Institutional Research

UNCA Teaching Fellows Program Goals

  • To develop Teaching Fellows as leaders, community volunteers, and models in teacher education for other students and faculty at UNCA and in the public schools.

  • To provide Teaching Fellows with unique learning experiences through seminars and structured internships/mentorships in the public schools and various agencies and institutions in the Asheville area.

  • To enrich the development of the total student in the Teaching Fellows Program by providing challenging intellectual and cultural experiences through travel and study both nationally and internationally.

  • To provide broader training to the Fellows in psychology, human and professional development, diversity awareness, classroom organization and management, ethics and pride in teaching.

  • To involve Teaching Fellows/alumni in activities to assist in program evaluation and revision, to aid in recruitment of new Fellows, and to serve as mentors and workshop presenters for the program.

To Promote the Goals

UNC-A Teaching Fellows participate in numerous study and travel enrichment opportunities. Beginning in the freshman year, they participate in a two-hour seminar designed to better understand teaching and learning, and gain field experience by working with master teachers in area schools.

Mentoring and Advising for Teaching Fellows

Teaching Fellows receive a START/academic advisor, an advisor from the Education Department and a Teaching Fellow Big Brother/Sister. They also receive mentoring from the Teaching Fellows Program Director and from area public-school educators. Freshman Fellows participate in early fall orientation, which allows them to move in one day early to get better acquainted with both the Teaching Fellows Program and the campus.

Related Programs Available to Teaching Fellows

Teaching Fellows may qualify for the Honors Program, which provides additional cultural and academic opportunities. They also have the opportunity to conduct field-based research through UNCA's nationally recognized Undergraduate Research Program.
