A major goal of the UNCA Teaching Fellows Program is to get students ready for the classroom. One way we accomplish this goal is through continuous tutoring and mentoring experiences during a fellow's four years at the university. Teaching Fellows are given the opportunity to tutor at various grade levels in the subject of their choice, creating a learning environment for Fellows as well as the students. Also, UNCA Teaching Fellows alternate between rural schools and inner city schools in these tutoring experiences to get a feel for the diverse environments.

More than the opportunity to create better teachers, the tutoring experiences are fun and exciting for everyone. Both tutors and tutees benefit from the program. Numerous Teaching Fellows still keep in touch with students they tutored last semester or last year. The students are often able to come to the university and shadow their tutor for a day or join them for a Bulldog basketball game.

Many paid programs are also available to the Teaching Fellows at UNCA. AVID, Education Coalition, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Western NC  provide numerous opportunities for students to be trained and gain experience within the schools.  Although nothing can fully prepare an aspiring teacher for the classroom, UNCA Teaching Fellows are given the opportunity to use these tutoring experiences as a learning environment. Fellows are responsible for taking charge of tutoring groups, although more experienced teachers are always available if help is needed. So, if what they say is true, "Practice makes perfect" . . . the UNCA Teaching Fellows are well on their way.
