Student Organiations at UNC Asheville

There are about 84 recognized campus organizations, including general interest organizations, honor societies, departmental clubs, fraternities and sororities, and community service groups. They sponsor many events for the entire campus, as well as for their members. In most cases, membership is open. Each year, the Office of Student Activities and the Student Government Association recognize student organizations in order that they receive funding for activities and the use of campus facilities. Forms and information may be obtained from the Office of Student Activities and Integrative Learning at 215 Highsmith. A listing of UNCA organizations follows.

General Interest Organizations

Active Students for a Healthy Environment (ASHE)
ASHE is a member of the Student Environmental Action Coalition-the largest student-run, student-led environmental organization in the US. We focus on raising awareness, leadership development, and initiating proactive, progressive action to make positive sustainable changes in our environment. We are involved with campus greening, forest, water, air, and other health quality issues, and analyzing the environmental effects of globalization and the stratification of wealth in our community and the world.

Accountancy Association
The purpose of the UNC Asheville Accountancy Association is to provide students with in-depth information about the Accounting and Management programs, and to provide academic assistance to UNCA students enrolled in accounting courses.

Africana Club
The purpose of the Africana Club is to be a means outside the classroom for erasing the stigma surrounding Africa itself and her descendents, celebrating the cultural richness of the African diasporas, and gaining a better understanding of the histories that play a significant part in the current status of Black people in societies around the world.  Membership is open to anyone willing to learn.  Advisor: Dr. Afaf Omer, 251-6979 ,aomer@unca.edu
All Girl Staff
The purpose of All Girls Staff is to be UNC Asheville's all female a cappella singing group. We strive to create an atmosphere that benefits the girls who sing with us in a way to be supportive of their self esteem and allows them to be comfortable with their own talents.  Also, we provide UNC Asheville with entertainment options for various events. Alliance
The mission of Alliance is to exist as an inclusive organization dedicated to improving the relationship between the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Straight community. To provide support for individuals in the UNC Asheville family (students, faculty, and staff) that identify as one or more of the GLBTQ/S letters or any variation thereof.

American Meteorological Society
The UNCA American Meteorological Society chapter provides the resources necessary to foster the growth of the field of Atmospheric Sciences and enhance the learning abilities by our members of the intricate workings of the atmosphere. The Chapter sponsors trips to many locations where members can get a first-hand look at various aspects and occupations of the atmospheric sciences. American Civil Liberties Union - UNCA Chapter
The UNCA chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union seeks to contribute to the academic dialogue of the Asheville community by fostering intelligent and meaningful discussion of civil and individual liberties. Advisor: Mark Gibney, 250-3870, mgibney@unca.edu
 
American Red Cross - UNC Asheville Chapter
It is the purpose of the UNCA Chapter of the American Red Cross to be the affiliate of the Red Cross on UNCA's campus.  By doing so our chapter will organize Red Cross blood drives in addition to any other kind of service that the Red Cross request us to participate in. Our main goal is to further the service of the American Red Cross to UNC Asheville's campus and allow students to become active participants in the Red Cross service efforts.

Amnesty International - UNCA Chapter

The Amnesty International student organization at UNC Asheville is committed to promoting awareness of global human rights issues and concerns by empowering student activist. Anthropology-Sociology Society (An-So Society)
The fundamental purpose of the Anthropology-Sociology Society shall: network and interact with each other, exchange in dialogue about issues related to anthropology/sociology and perspectives on social issues, provide and receive information about internships,  employment, research, leadership and community service project opportunities. We will also sponsor and participate in events that contribute to understanding of anthropology/sociology in today's world.

Art Front
Art Front is a student run organization whose mission is to promote the UNCA Art Department to the greater community of UNCA and Asheville, to involve UNCA students in the expressive arts and their appreciation, and, through educational opportunities to prepare students for future experiences in the arts. Asian Students in Asheville (ASIA)
The purposes of ASIA is to unify UNC Asheville students interested in Asian cultures through social interaction, cultural programs and activities, and political awareness; through building a strong social network, ASIA strives to demerit stereotypes and promote understanding the spectrum of various Asian cultures.

Better Asheville Recycling Coalition

The purpose of the Better Asheville Recycling Coalition (BARC) is to encourage and assist UNCA students and members of the Asheville community in creating changes that promote environmentally responsible, healthy and sustainable communities. BARC's positive campaign of education, awareness and community activism includes the continuing improvement of recycling programs both on UNCA's campus and in the Asheville area, so that local business reflect our local values. Black Student Association (BSA)
This organization exists to strengthen and encourage personal development among black students and to foster high ideals for leadership, responsibility and cooperation. The organization also upholds the pride, prestige and cultural consciousness of all minority Americans through the implementation of cultural, educational and motivational ventures planned for the entire UNCA community. The Blue Banner
The student-produced and managed weekly newspaper, The Blue Banner, operated as a public forum for the dissemination of news for and about students, faculty and staff. It accepts letters, comments, article suggestions and criticism from anyone concerned about the welfare of the university. The staff is responsible for photography, writing, editing and layout. The editorial board, which comprises the editor and the division editors, makes final decisions on content. For information, visit the Karpen Hall office room #019  or call 251-6586.
Bulldog Fever
Bulldog Fever is an organization created to promote school pride among UNCA students, encourage participation in school athletics and increase support for Bulldog athletics. Advisor: Erin Punter, 250-3857, epunter@unca.edu
Bulldog Pep Band
The UNC - Asheville Pep Band is a musical organization designed to promote school spirit among spectators, fans, athletes, and other groups that attend or participate in UNC-Asheville athletics.  This organization is open to both students and faculty/staff despite their level of playing ability. For students, we offer the opportunity to play in the Pep Band without taking a class or if the students prefer, they have the opportunity to take Pep Band as a course with a one - hour credit. Bulldog Stompers
A clogging team on campus with the goals of learning and performing dances at recreation and competition levels. Membership at the recreation level is open to students, faculty, and staff, and at the competition level to all those who show proficiency in advanced clogging skills.

Cycling Club
The purpose of The Cycling Club at UNCA is to form a community where students, faculty and staff who enjoy cycling for recreation, commuting, competition, or who have no experience but want to give cycling a try, can come together with others in a supportive and fun atmosphere. The Cycling Club sponsors events to promote cycling as a recreational and competitive sport, as well as an alternative mode of transportation benefiting both our health and that of our environment. Democracy Matters

EPEC - El Proyecto de Estudiantes en la Comunidad Hispana
The Students Project in the Hispanic Community

Habitat for Humanity
The purpose of Habitat for Humanity UNCA is to establish and maintain an active chapter of Habitat for Humanity at UNCA that will continue to serve the community of the Asheville area into the future. This will take the form of providing volunteers from both the student and faculty bodies to work on the construction of new homes, and in the Habitat store (in order to raise capital for the building of those homes) in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity International, through the local affiliate, the Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity. Headwaters Creative Arts Magazine
Headwaters is the official UNCA creative arts magazine, publishing poetry, art, photography, fiction, plays and essays by both students and faculty. Hippocrates Student Organization
The purpose of Hippocrates Student Organization is to provide an association for students interested in pre-health professions and to complement the Pre-Health Professions Program. HSO promotes and supports community activities for future health professionals. Activities include assisting students in preparation for pre-professional tests, exploring and getting experience in the many careers of healthcare, offering admissions support, providing links to the Pre-Health committee and other university administration, and organizing social events for pre-health students at UNCA.

History Association
The History Student Association is meant to be a gathering place for students inside and outside the major of history with the intention of creating a community of learning for these students. Humanities Student Association
The purpose of the Humanities Student Association is to provide student members with the structure, the means to organize, and the forum for exploration of humanities-related topics outside of the classroom context and Humanities Program course structure.

International Students Association (ISA)
A group of international and American students and staff who get together to explore the cultures of our diverse community and university. We participate in campus events and activities; sponsor musical events, foreign films, international fashion shows, and food samplings; and have fun!

International Association for Jazz Education
This organization seeks to nurture and promote the understanding and appreciation of jazz and its heritage, take an active role in organizing clinics, festivals, and symposia at the local level and function as a resource for music appreciation and development to educators, performers, and the student body. Literature Club
The UNCA Literature Club has been established to provide students of this University, regardless of major, the opportunity to attend lectures, readings and discussions featuring contemporary writers of Poetry and Prose. The Literature Club will organize fundraising events to help provide the resources and support for bringing in writers, and will also organize social events to foster a greater sense of community among students and faculty in the literature Department, the campus, and the surrounding community as a whole.

Math Club

Mediation Group
The purpose of this meditation group is to provide a place for UNCA students, faculty and staff to mediate together on campus. In this group we will create an atmosphere of openness in which people can share experiences, express interests for seminars and workshops and sample different teachings and forms of mediation.

Metabolism
Metabolism is a student-run magazine dedicated to synthesizing the academic and creative output of the UNCA students and faculty into a printed and online journal distributed twice per semester and once over summer at no cost to the reader. Students for a Democratic Society
We as UNCA SDS are a group that is dedicated to the fight against imperialism. We are for positive social, political, and economic change. We are actively involved in fighting for this change through activism. We stand in resolute opposition to the war in Iraq and protest the current occupation. We demand US troops out of Iraq now. We are against all imperialist wars and interventions including those in Colombia and Palestine. We fight to create a world free of sexism, free of racism, free of heterosexism, and free of war. We are against all forms of oppression and we actively struggle both within ourselves and within our communities against these types of chauvinism and support all others who fight alongside of us. We are for human rights, and believe that all have the right to education, housing, healthcare, clean water, and food. We join with our brothers and sisters in campuses across the world as Students for a Democratic Society to increase all phases of democracy in our lives and to engage in the struggle for a better world. We, as youth and students, have the power to enact real social change — and we are fighting for this. Dare to struggle — Dare to win!

Student Government Association (SGA)
UNCA's Student Government Association exists to represent you, the student, at the local, state and national levels. SGA strives to make the voice of UNCA’ s student body heard through constant contact with the UNC General Administration, the North Carolina General Assembly and the UNCA administration. The SGA president is a full voting member of the UNCA Board of Trustees, the university’ s highest governing board. SGA is not a token government; rather, it plays an active and vital part in the decision- and policy-making process at UNCA. The Student Government Association is recognized by the university as the official governing body of its students and, like the federal government, SGA is organized into executive, legislative and judicial branches. Each branch focuses on a specific area while keeping in contact with the other two. This creates a checks-and-balances system which ensures that every decision is made fairly and in the best interests of the student body. Every student enrolled at UNCA is considered an SGA member and is invited to get involved. Officials are elected each spring, except freshman senators who are elected in the fall. Appointments of qualified applicants to all three branches of government are made throughout the year. All that is required for any post is a 2.0 (or better) GPA and current enrollment in at least six semester hours of classes.

The UNCA Tribe of American Indians
A student organization dedicated to educating ourselves and others about the traditions and ways of the American Indians. Awakening our understanding of American Indian culture through hands on experience unites us with our heritage and brings our lives closer to the earth. Underdog Productions
Underdog Productions (UP) is UNCA's student-run campus activities board. The diverse student leaders who are chosen to serve in UP are dedicated to providing the campus community with a wide array of entertaining social, recreational and educational events in short, making things happen! 
As some of the more than 15 leadership positions in UP open, students interested in getting involved may apply. These positions are rewarded with a small stipend, but volunteers are always welcome. Students do not need to know how to program events, as UP is one of more than 1,200 member colleges in the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA), which provides superb educational and training opportunities at its workshops and conferences. UP members may learn and sharpen programming skills through NACA as well as the many other leadership programs offered on campus by UNCA.

United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT)
Technical theater resource for the community, especially for area high schools.

University Ambassadors Program
Selected Students who volunteer to share their knowledge of UNCA and enthusiasm with prospective students, their families and other interested parties. Ambassadors lead tours of campus daily and during Open House and other Admissions-related programs. They also travel across the state and region to assist the Admissions Office in hosting receptions. Because of these opportunities, they develop valuable communication skills. Ambassadors are selected on the basis of their leadership qualities, interpersonal skills and dedication to UNCA. They are trained and supervised by the Office of Admissions. All UNCA students, regardless of race, creed or national origin, are invited to apply. Call the Admissions Office, 251-6481
World Affairs Club
The object of the World Affairs Club (WAC) shall be to organize students interested in world affairs for the purpose of developing and encouraging interest in world news and events and providing a resource for education and learning about international issues.

National service fraternity that develops leadership, promotes friendship, and provides service to humanity. Membership is open to all University students.

Affiliated with Rotary International, Rotaract strives to assist the community while developing leadership and professional skills through service projects, social activities, and guest speakers.

Religious Organizations

Baptist Student Union
Helps students focus on the questions: Who am I? , What am I to do? and Where am I going? While exploring these questions, students also have the opportunity for service and ministry through missions, outreach, Bible study, fellowship, worship, and personal and spiritual growth. The Baptist Student Center is adjacent to campus. 
Catholic Student Association
Catholic Student Services will provide a warm environment for Catholics and those interested in the Catholic faith to share in worship, service, and fellowship.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA)
A group of Christian students, athletes and coaches who are committed to personal growth in a daily relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. FCA presents the gospel of Christ in a way that is fun and exciting, and involves games, skits, special events, testimonies, music and fellowship.

Intervarsity Christian Fellowship (IV)

Jewish Student Association
For Jewish or non-Jewish students who want to form a comfortable atmosphere for religious, cultural, and recreational activities. Aims to educate everyone about Judaism and the Jewish Civilization.
Presbyterian Campus Ministry
A Christian organization supported by local Presbyterian churches, the Fellowship works with the campus to provide opportunities to explore faith and life issues through weekly Bible study, monthly worship, mission trips, special programs and fellowship activities. Everyone, regardless of religious affiliation, is invited to join.

Covenant Reformed University Fellowship
Seeks to reach students for Christ and to equip them to serve. These goals are primarily reached by meeting weekly to unfold the word of God for understanding and relevant application. The group extends its fellowship periodically to include dinners, outreach events and retreats.

United Methodist Campus Ministries

Honor Societies

Alpha Kappa Delta (Sociology)
Promotes the interest and unity of students in the study and theory of sociology. Membership is open to all sociology majors who meet the national AKD requirements. Associate membership is open to the entire campus.
National Society of Collegiate Scholars
The National Society of Collegiate Scholars values scholarship, leadership, and service. Admission is based on freshman GPA and class standing.
Omicron Delta Epsilon (Economics)
An international economics society open to economics majors and other students who have completed a minimum of 12 hours in economics, meet the GPA requirements of 3.0, and have demonstrated an interest in economics.
Omicron Delta Kappa (Leadership)
Second in age and prestige only to Phi Beta Kappa, the organization awards membership to juniors and seniors who have distinguished themselves in academics and leadership. It brings together faculty, administrators and leaders in all phases of campus life.

Phi Alpha Theta (History)
The Phi Theta chapter of Phi Alpha Theta is a professional organization whose purpose if to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. It seeks to bring students, teachers and writers of history together both intellectually and socially. And it encourages and assists its members historical research and publication in a variety of ways.

Phi Eta Sigma (Freshman Honor Society)
A nationally recognized freshman honor society that salutes freshmen who achieve a 3.5 or better GPA during their first semester or year.

Phi Sigma Tau (Philosophy)
Pi Delta Phi (French)
Recognizes outstanding scholarship in French language and literature. It works to increase knowledge of France’s contribution to world culture and to stimulate and encourage cultural activities, leading to deeper appreciation of France and the French world. Membership is by election, based on academic achievement in a minimum of five courses in French (including one in French literature).
Pi Sigma Alpha (Political Science)
National honor society for political science majors. The UNCA chapter, Omicron Psi, sponsors programs and conferences throughout the year. Membership requirements include 12 hours of political science credit with a 3.2 GPA. Membership allows a two-step increase in starting salary levels with the federal government.
Psi Chi (Psychology)
The mission of Club Psych is to unify students who share similar curiosities in psychology and are interested in pursuing those curiosities beyond the classroom. The club offers students a chance to get to know each other outside the classroom setting as well as take advantage of fund raising and team building events such as talks on how to get into graduate school, baked potato sales, as well as social events like hiking trips. The club is dedicated to furthering the knowledge of each of its members in the field of psychology and all the facets within.

Sigma Pi Sigma (Physics)
The national physics honor society recognizes students who have achieved high academic standards in physics. Those who have completed three physics courses above the freshman level with a 3.5 GPA in physics and who have a 3.2 GPA overall are eligible for membership. Advisor: TBA

Fraternities and Sororities

Alpha Xi Delta
A Greek women's fraternity founded April 17, 1893, at Lombard College, it is devoted to the ideals of high scholarship, philanthropy and sisterhood among women.

Gamma Phi Beta
A national sorority founded at Syracuse University on Nov. 11, 1874, it encourages members to strive for academic excellence while engaging in many campus activities.

Kappa Delta Rho
Develops educated gentlemen in an effort to foster human dignity, positive relationships among men, and moral excellence of the highest ideals.

Sigma Nu
A fraternity of men working cooperatively toward common goals and striving to live a life of love, truth and honor. The fraternity strives to develop effective leaders and responsible citizens, to interact socially with one another and the campus community, and to promote campus life. Members work together to accomplish academic goals, and alumni continue to learn, keeping the values of Sigma Nu as guidelines for a successful future.

Theta Chi
Theta Chi is a brotherhood of young men who share similar world views, goals, and plans for the future. The primary goal of the fraternity is to assist each member in procuring the most positive college experience possible and to develop him into a mature, responsible, and well-rounded individual. We involve ourselves in a wide range of campus activities including, but not limited to, intramural sports, community service activities and interaction with other campus organizations. Theta Chi has 160 chapters throughout the United States and Canada. The first chapter was founded in 1856 at Norwich University. As an international organization, Theta Chi offers scholarships for academics and athletics and holds annual conferences to teach and promote leadership and education.
