What’s it all about?

Sociology and Anthropology are two social sciences that are closely linked by their interest in understanding the relationship between individuals and the larger social worlds they create. The two fields attempt to study societies by understanding the people from their own perspectives. This involves learning to look past stereotypes and to understand other cultures from the point of view of those who live inside. There are very few things that sociologists and anthropologists don’t study; we are interested in the way that many areas of life are socially defined and maintained, including science, religion, medicine, law, bureaucracy, family, business, gender, race and ethnicity, poverty, commerce, welfare, labor markets, culture, arts, child rearing, aging, crime, drug use, and violence.

We have special courses for students interested in specific research areas. We also offer an internship program which allows students to explore their interests in specific work environments (social work, non-profits, and criminal justice are common choices), and to reflect on their experience with the tools of the disciplines of sociology and anthropology.

What can I do with Sociology and Anthropology?

Within the liberal arts context, the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at UNCA offers students an opportunity to critically reflect on the world around us -- a world that is filled with rapid social and technological change, issues of social inclusion, ethnic clashes, poverty, and questions of changing gender and family roles.  Our courses offer an opportunity to reflect, do research, and simply learn about the world beyond ourselves.  Sociology and Anthropology offer a sound preparation for fields related to social work, criminal justice, gerontology and health care, non-profit organizations, and the business world.  Students may also choose to continue their studies in graduate schools, in fields such as Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work, Management and Law.
