UNC Asheville Student Health Insurance Information

Beginning with the Fall 2008 Semester, UNC Asheville undergraduate students taking 12 or more credit hours must have a valid health insurance policy. Students who can document that they have a minimum level of health insurance coverage will receive a waiver. Students who do not yet have health insurance can purchase it through UNC Asheville from Pearce & Pearce, a national company specializing in health insurance for college students.

In selecting the Pearce & Pearce plan, the University sought to balance adequate coverage and reasonable cost. The cost of basic coverage through Pearce & Pearce is $611 a year and provides 12-month coverage. Additional coverage is available. Those who purchase the insurance through the University will be able to have the insurance premiums built into the cost of attendance for financial aid purposes.

To Enroll

For detailed information about the Pearce & Pearce insurance plan and to enroll, go to www.studentinsurance.com and enter UNCA in the "Search for Your Institution" box.  If you have additional questions, please call Pearce & Pearce at 1-888-622-6001 or UNC Asheville Health Services at 1-828-251-6520 or send an Email to rpyeritz@unca.edu.

To Receive a Waiver

Students who have health insurance and wish to receive a waiver must go to www.studentinsurance.com, and enter their policy information on the Pearce & Pearce website.

Pearce & Pearce will check to see if the policy is in force; if the policy is valid, the charge for UNC Asheville's Pearce & Pearce plan will be removed from your bill. If you do not provide this information, your account will be charged for the student insurance.

Part-Time Students

Undergraduate students taking 6 to 11 credit hours are not required to have health insurance, but may purchase the Pearce & Pearce plan on a voluntary basis. Students taking five credit hours or less are not eligible to purchase this plan.
