General Information
Mission Statement
UNC-Asheville's Student Government Association exists to represent you, the student, at the local, state and national levels. SGA strives to make the voice of UNC-Asheville's student body heard through constant contact with the UNC General Administration, the North Carolina General Assembly and the UNC-Asheville administration. The SGA president is a full voting member of the UNC-Asheville Board of Trustees, the university's highest governing board. SGA is not a token government; rather, it plays an active and vital part in the decision- and policy-making process at UNC-Asheville.
The Student Government Association is recognized by the university as the official governing body of its students and, like the federal government, SGA is organized into executive and legislative branches. Each branch focuses on a specific area while keeping in contact with the other one. This creates a checks-and-balances system which ensures that every decision is made fairly and in the best interests of the student body.
Every student enrolled at UNC-Asheville is considered an SGA member and is invited to get involved. Officials are elected each spring, except freshman senators who are elected in the fall. Appointments of qualified applicants to all three branches of government are made throughout the year. The basic requirements for any post is a 2.0 (or better) GPA and current enrollment in at least six semester hours of classes.
