State laws, Local laws, and University policies. The following information is

In a Nut Shell
Engaging in any of the following activities is either illegal, against the UNCA
ITS Policy, or could become a controversial legal issue. It is
suggested that you avoid all of the following activities as a whole to prevent
potential issues from evolving.
DO NOT enter any computer site, system or resource which is not obviously open
to the public.
DO NOT attempt to supply a password to a secured area which you have no right to
access.
DO NOT take or borrow any material which does not belong to you and is not for
use of public domain. The Internet is not a "free" resource. Everything found on
the Internet belongs to someone.
DO NOT display pornographic material. While this is a broad statement,
pornography would and does fall in a very controversial category.
DO NOT use excessive bandwidth. This means consuming ITS resources
through the heavy use of servers including FTP, Game, IRQ & WWW.
DO NOT use trademarks belonging to others without written permission.
DO NOT use email improperly. Threatening, harassing, or sending any material to
a receiver who would be offended by the content should be avoided. This includes
profanity. See NC State Laws.
DO NOT use network neighborhood/sharing improperly. Anything placed in a shared
directory on the network is considered to be redistributed. If you choose to
redistribute software, be sure you have the legal right to do so.
DO NOT create, spread, or infect any computer system with a virus, trojan, or
similar program.
Remember, following these basic beliefs will help keep you out of trouble. If
what you want to do seems wrong it probably is!
Network Management
The UNCA ITS provides network connections to students for the
purpose of assisting in formal educational achievement. Therefore, students are
encouraged to utilize computer related resources in a positive manner. This
network is managed with the purpose of maintaining maximum network efficiency.
While the network is not "policed" for content belonging to valid users, it is
managed with the intent of identifying areas causing potential lag to the
system. As a managed network we reserve the right to use necessary tools to
identify all users on the UNCA network.
