What is
ResNet?
ResNet is an acronym for Residential Network. UNCA completed a new fiber optics
network that included high speed Ethernet connections in the Residence Hall rooms in 1998
and a network equipment upgrade during the summer of 2002, which made all dorm room
jacks available for immediate use.
If you experience in-room connection issues, please
use our In-Room Appointment scheduler located to
the left.

NetLaw page.
All students are reminded that they are subject to the
terms outlined in the UNC-Asheville Student Usage Policy for Computing and Networking.
What computer should I buy?
The choice is yours.
UNCA does not make computer recommendations, but there are minimum functional
requirements for our network. For the most part, any new computer purchase will meet these requirements.
Before coming
on campus, protect yourself and the UNCA network.
Make
sure your computer has Virus Protection, such as Norton, McAfee, or AVG, and it
is up-to-date. Just because your machine came with an antivirus program, does
not mean that your machine is still protected. Most antivirus programs are only
trial offers and need to be purchased. After the software has been purchased, it
will need to be updated regularly. Most programs can be set to do this
automatically. If you wish not to purchase software, you can download a free
antivirus through AVG.
AVG Free edition
Virus infected computers will be
disconnected from the network.
If you
are a Windows PC user, make sure all Windows OS critical updates have been
completed. To do this, go to:

Wireless Networks
Information
Technology Services provides wireless network access in select locations on
campus. Current wireless coverage areas include the east end of Robinson Hall
(Physics area), all of Ramsey Library including Cafe Ramsey and the Glass House
area, the central campus Quad area in front of Ramsey Library and all of the new
Highsmith Student Union building. Other locations such as the Dining Hall and
Lipinsky Auditorium are under consideration and will be announced when
available.
Ramsey Library offers a wireless laptop checkout service at the circulation desk
for use in the Library. Otherwise all wireless laptops must be registered prior
to use with the ITS office in Lipinsky Hall. Come by LH117 with your OneCard ID
and fill out a form with contact info and the required Ethernet info from your
laptop. Once this is complete and the unit is registered you may then use the
wireless network. ALL wireless implementations must be approved by and
coordinated with ITS Network Services. Unauthorized wireless access units are
subject to immediate disconnection from the campus network.
More information about what is needed for connection to the UNCA wireless
network can be found at:
