Religious Studies

One of the great achievements of modern scholarship is the invention of the modern study of religion.  It ought to be an essential element of education. . . .  The fact that we do not just practice religion or ideology, but study it means a new phase of human awareness.

--Ninian Smart
Religion and the Western Mind

Religious Studies at UNCA began in 1999 as a minor program within the Department of Philosophy.  Now an interdisciplinary program that draws its resources from throughout the university, it will soon become a separate department offering students both a major and a minor in Religious Studies.
