Biofeedback

The Health & Wellness Department and Campus Recreation-Wellness are pleased to offer an exciting new resource for the UNCA campus community who are interested in enhancing their performance, dissolving barriers, and improving their health.

The Biofeedback Lab is a research and resource center dedicated to achieving optimal performance by its users. Located in HFC 210, the lab uses biofeedback as a non-invasive way of making its users aware of their physiologic responses to stress and personal coaching to learn a variety of tension reducing tools.

There are several different programs, either self-directed or facilitated, offered in the Biofeedback Lab to help you towards your goals. Click on the various listed programs below for more information.

Freeze-Framer

Using a photoplethysmograph attached to a finger, the blood volume & pulse are measure and recorded. The premise of this program is that there is a correlation between the magnetic field of the heart and the wave patterns in the brain. As the person achieves balance the person moves into a state of relaxed focus. Useful for relaxation training, hand-warming, attention training, and "flow" training.

Journey to Wild Divine

Using three sensors enclosed in "magic rings", the program measures skin conductance levels and blood volume/pressure, and based on the activity in those areas animation occurs. Unlike Freeze-Framer, this program trains for flexibility.

Infiniti Biofeedback

There are literally hundreds of Surface EMG training programs that can be run in the lab. Some of these include temperature training (useful in headache, migraine management, anxiety management, and various stress-related disorders), heart rate variability training, skin conductance training, and specific muscle retraining.

Audio-Visual Entrainment Resources

This piece of equipment has programs which link brain centers through specific light and sound patterns. Set up your appoints with Connie.

Autogentic Training, Relaxation Coaching

Have a chance to be led by one of our student facilitators through standard physical relaxation training--breathing lessons, progressive relaxation, QR training, hand-warming scripts, and autogentic training as requested. Resource materials (handouts) will be available in the lab so that students interested in exploring some of these techniques can make appointments for coaching.

EEG Resources

It is possible to monitor brainwave activity and undertake training in a variety of areas depending on the interest of the participant or researcher. However, because of the complexity of training protocols, these will need to be considered specifically.

Lab Hours:

Mondays 1:30-3:30 (Facilitator-Illysa)
