Mr. Nelson welcomed the Working Group members to the meeting at 2:00 pm. He gave an update on the July 11 Board of Trustee meeting for those who had not been able to attend. During consultation with the Trustees, they requested to see how the Guiding Principles would work in a real-world example and suggested that a case study be presented at the September meeting.

The Working Group members ‘test drove’ the Guiding Principles by applying them to a hypothetical situation, to see how they might work as a decision-making tool.

The hypothetical case study was the selection of a site for a new 300-bed residence hall. The group identified 4 different sites as possibilities, including: 1. A site to be purchased, 2. North Property site (above the Reuter Center), 3. Current Athletic Field site, and 4. the Ridges Parking Deck site. The Working Group members assessed the potential sites through the lens of the 9 Guiding Principles -- weighing the positive, negative or neutral effect of using each site for a new residence hall. For each principle, the Working Group assigned an overall rating for each site.

The Working Group concluded that the Guiding Principles were, indeed, helpful in narrowing the options. They recommend that the Trustees undertake a similar ‘test drive’ to determine whether they feel the Guiding Principles can be helpful in a practical application.

Mr. Nelson concluded the meeting at 3:05 pm.

After the meeting had concluded a worksheet was developed to facilitate the discussion in September (see worksheet).
