Steering Committee Charter
The Campus Master Plan Steering Committee has been created at the direction of the Chancellor, after consultation with the UNC Asheville Board of Trustees. UNC Asheville, along with experts and consultants, will develop a new campus master plan.
A campus master plan is a long-range strategy and plan that establishes a vision for the physical use of land and facilities on campus with the primary purpose of ensuring that the University’s academic needs are fulfilled so as to offer a high-quality education to its students. It should be realistic, rational, comprehensive, consolidated, and coordinated.
While the UNC Asheville Board of Trustees is responsible for the final approval of the campus master plan, the Steering Committee’s primary purpose is to serve as the governing body of the campus master planning process. It will receive broad input and participation from the campus community during the master planning process, primarily from the UNC Asheville Campus Master Plan Working Group, consultants, and others working as part of the Master Planning Team.
Members of the Steering Committee will be responsible for final decisions regarding the selection of experts and consultants to develop the master plan. The committee will also direct the Master Planning Team in all matters related to content, direction, and execution.
The master planning process will focus on the following functional issues:
- Existing space and facility needs
- Future space and facility needs
- Environmental issues, including energy usage and sustainability
- Aesthetics and architectural character
- Vehicle, transportation, and pedestrian traffic needs
- Landscaping, recreation and open space needs
- Financial planning and viability
- Wayfinding, signage, and lighting
During its discussions, the Committee will receive input from the Working Group as it considers alternative ideas, concepts and approaches to the various functional issues.
The Steering Committee will report regularly to the UNC Asheville Board of Trustees.
