UNC Asheville Hosts "Delicious Movement" Workshop with Eiko & Koma

Eiko & Koma
Eiko & Koma will hold a "Delicious Movement" workshop
on April 13

UNC Asheville's Office of Cultural and Special Events and Warren Wilson College will host a "Delicious Movement" workshop with internationally known dance artists Eiko & Koma from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 13, at Bryson Gym, Warren Wilson College. The workshop is open to the public; no dance experience is necessary. Cost is $10 check or cash at the door only. No pre-registration is required. Participants should dress in loose, comfortable clothing and be prepared to work barefoot.

Eiko & Koma will work with each participant to help develop a lifelong pleasure in dancing and body movement. The workshop is a tool for peacemaking and an exercise of valuing artistic and philosophical differences. Participants will explore their own personal style through improvisational movement. They will be guided through a series of exercises designed to increase skills and awareness in the areas of focus, coordination and stance.

Eiko & Koma were law and political science students in Japan when they joined Tokyo's Tatsumi Hijikata dance company. Though they have no traditional Japanese dance or theater training, Eiko & Koma went on to work with artists like Robert Mirabal, Chanticleer, Praise Choir and Joseph Jennings. In 1984, they were named John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellows and awarded "Bessies," New York Dance and Performance Awards.

The workshop is held in conjunction with Eiko & Koma's performance at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 12 at UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium. Tickets are $20 general admission. Tickets are available online at www.uncatickets.com or at UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union Box Office at 828/232-5000.

For more information, call UNC Asheville's Office of Cultural and Special Events at 828/251-6991.
