"Hold Sway," an art exhibition featuring 18 works by UNC Asheville senior Celia Gray, will be on display through August 5 in UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union Gallery.

Gray employs a method known as encaustic painting, which uses pigmented beeswax in favor of traditional paints. The wax is kept in liquid form at around 200 degrees by hot plates while working. Surface effects and images are created using various methods of scraping, masking, incising, branding and buffing. The technique allows for added depth and a more tactile quality.

Gray will receive a bachelor's of art degree from UNC Asheville in August. Her work is also on display at The Blue Spiral 1 in Asheville and The Penland Gallery at Penland School of Crafts.

The gallery is located on the lower level of UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union. It is free and open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
