UNC Asheville to Host Screening of "Encounter Point," Talk by Filmmaker;

Still from "Encounter Point"

Noted filmmaker Ronit Avni will screen her new film, "Encounter Point," at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center. A talk will follow. The event, which is hosted by UNC Asheville's Center for Jewish Studies, is free and open to the public.

"Encounter Point" is an 85-minute documentary that follows a former Israeli settler, a Palestinian ex-prisoner, a bereaved Israeli mother and a wounded Palestinian brother who each risk their lives and public standing to promote a nonviolent end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Their journeys lead them to confront hatred in their communities. The film explores what drives them and thousands of other like-minded civilians to overcome anger and grief to work for grassroots solutions.

Avni is the founder and executive director of Just Vision, a nonprofit organization that widens the influence of Palestinian and Israeli grassroots peace builders. She has co-produced short films with filmmakers in Senegal, Burkina Faso, the United States and Brazil for WITNESS, Peter Gabriel's human rights organization. Avni also wrote and produced "Rise," a short documentary film, with the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan. She recently received the Auburn Seminary's Lives of Commitment Award. She has written for American Anthropologist and Satya Magazine.
