In conjunction with the regional "Together We
Read" program on Robert Morgan's book "Boone," UNC Asheville will
host two special events this fall celebrating the book as well as
the life of Daniel Boone. Events include a talk by nationally
acclaimed author Robert Morgan and a discussion of Boone history.
Both are free and open to the public.
Local scholar Phyllis Lang will give a talk on "Daniel Boone:
Wilderness Man" at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at UNC Asheville's Reuter
Center. Lang will trace Boone's youth as a frontiersman and hunter
to his adult years as an explorer and leader. The multimedia program
will include a discussion on sites associated with Boone, including
Pilot Knob, Cumberland Gap and Blue Licks Battleground. Lang is the
former director of UNC Asheville's Honors Program and taught in the
Mass Communications Department. Retired now from full-time teaching,
she is an independent scholar and researcher with a special interest
in Asheville and Buncombe County history. Her talk is sponsored by
the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement. For more

Morgan will read from "Boone" and discuss issues of Appalachian
identity at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, in UNC Asheville's Laurel
Forum, Karpen Hall. Morgan, who was raised on a family farm in
Western North Carolina, is the author of eleven books of poetry and
eight books of fiction, including the bestselling novel "Gap Creek."
Winner of a 2007 Academy of Arts and Letters Award for Literature,
Morgan lives in Ithaca, N.Y. and is a professor at Cornell
